Alpha Hydroxy Acids- This group of products is used for exfoliation. The word "acid" can be troublesome, as images of acid usually are not ones we find conducive to skin care. However, the type and concentration of the acid affects its durability. Many cosmetics contain AHAs and you may even be unaware if the acid content is low. Products with higher concentrations of AHAs are available, and are often marketed as "peels" on salon menus and in dermatologists' offices. They AHAs are explained below:

  • Glycolic Acid- This AHA is the gold standard of exfoliation and peels. This due to the fact that GA has the smallest particles of all the AHAs, thus it penetrates your skin easiest.
  • Lactic Acid-
  • Malic Acid
  • Citric Acid
  • Tartaric Acid

Antioxidants- These little guys throw some electrons down to the cell oxidation process and minimize the oxidation. Fruits and vegetables are packed with antioxidants. Antioxidants are often included in dietary supplements, however, the research on the supplements to date has been disappointing. Infact, the studies have found that supplements may  increase your chances of developing disease. With this information, I recommend getting your nutrition solely from food.

Apples-

Beta Hydroxy Acids

Blueberries

Cell Oxidation- When you are born, and take your first gulp of air, your cells begin to age. This seems a no-brainer, yes, but normal activities, i.e. breathing, deliver oxygen to your cells, where free radicals are created. Free Radicals are unstable particles that cause your cells to essentially dry up, or age.
